Opting For On Campus Dorm Life

College Life

Many colleges and universities require college freshmen to live on campus in a dorm. Even if your college of choice does not require dorm living, you would probably find dorm life a very beneficial choice. Dorms provide an inherent social life for those who are away on one’s own for the first time. It is easy to make new friends amongst this bunch of similarly experienced new students in the college dorms. You will be able to easily find dining companions, athletic mates, and study partners. You will be invited to many parties and and impromptu get-togethers. College life can be loads of fun, and you don’t want to miss out on this social experience by living off campus.

Don’t be frightened of the unknowns of your freshman dormitory roommate. You are both arriving from and heading towards similar situations. In the beginning, you may want to set up some ground rules of behavior. These rules could be as simple as who gets to the shower first, when bright lights go off, and when quiet study and sleep time must take place. If you need some space, the campus will have many places to hang out, from the beautifully manicured grounds, to student social halls, gym facilities, and of course the library.

If for some reason you don’t get along with your roommate as well as you would have liked, you can create privacy with creative dorm room decor. You could hang  a room darking and sound absorbing curtain, or set up a cork room dividing screen between your respective spaces. You could string up cheery Christmas lights in your favorite color to observe, focus, and daydream with. You can get sound concealing headphones so you can study in peace, or to your favorite tunes. Regardless of your dorm roommate computability issues, you will find that your on campus experience will yield positive memories that will last a lifetime.

A Look At Different Types of Film Schools

College Life

Film School

Film school can be a lot things. These types of schools vary as does the curriculum and program of filmmaking itself. Independent film schools are different than university film degree programs even though both teach film related material and skills.

They all teach varieties of the same thing but the methods, techniques, costs, program lengths and even material covered will be different each place thus it is best to explore all your choices and then choose the one that best suits your needs.

Four Year University Program
Film becomes your chosen major but you still complete general education classes and it takes four years to get your degree.

Benefits
– Scholarships are available.

- Lots of professionals teach part time at schools to keep the curriculum current and bring in other professionals to instruct and guide students.

– Plus these programs get first dibs on the prized high profile internships and jobs giving their students an advantage.

– There is tons of equipment available at all times for students to use and learn on.

The Down Side
– Some programs own your movies and work instead of you so you should ask questions before turning in your application.

– You won t be able to focus on film entirely because you ll have other classes.

Smaller School Program
Schools that aren t as large as the universities however still offer film degrees.

Good Points
– The admission process is less competitive so you can get in easier.

– Fewer students give you a more personalized education.

Disadvantages
– There is less equipment and access to industry professionals and such because of the smaller size.

The Independent One Year Program

– Shortened filmmaking programs that focus just on the craft with variable lengths of study.

Benefits
– The program is quick so you can get done and get to work.

– You have experience working on real sets because a lot of classes take place in actual locations where professionals work daily.

Disadvantages
– The programs are a full time job so you have to other sources of income while studying.

- They tend to be very costly with lots of extra expenses.

Alternative Film Programs

Lots of people take weekend crash courses or other filmmaking programs from outside parties.

Filmmaking isn t learned overnight so you might learn some things but not enough to start a career right away.
