Guinea Pig Questions?

So I've been wanting to get a guinea pig for some time but I don't know where to get one. I'd rather not go to a pet store. I'm looking for a reputable breeder in the SF bay area, preferably peninsula area or in the south bay. I've thought about adopting but I've had trouble finding a rescue organization in my area and I'd like to have a baby guinea pig.
Also I'm wondering if I should have two guinea pigs instead of one? I've heard that they can be lonely but as I'm keeping it in a college dorm room I'm short on space. I'm wondering how important it is for there to be a second guinea pig since I'll be in my room most of the time.
Also is it OK to let him/her (I'd probably get a her) out of the cage to roam around the room while I'm there?

Check petfinder.com for guinea pigs in your area if you haven't already. Or even craigslist

I drove an hour and a half to get mine. It's okay because you're saving a life.

Certainly you should have two, it's nice to have someone around to speaks your language. According to this site, floor time is a must. Just keep an eye on them and block off areas you don't want them to go.
